Earliness, yield and bulb parameters of hardneck garlic (Allium sativum L.) as influenced by leaf knotting and scape removal in north Indian plains

The present study was conducted during Rabi 2012–13 and 2013–14 to estimate the effect of scape removal, leaf knotting 4 weeks before harvest and leaf knotting 2 weeks before harvest on earliness, yield and bulb parameters of hardneck garlic cultivar ‘PG-17’ in north western plains of India. The removal of scapes has no effect on reduction in days to maturity, equatorial diameter of bulb, bulb weight, number of cloves per bulb and cured bulb yield as compared to control. The knotting of leaves 4 and 2 weeks before harvest advanced maturity by 12 and 6 days, respectively, over control. Leaf knotting 4 weeks before harvest significantly decreased equatorial diameter of bulb, bulb weight and cured bulb yield, whereas, leaf knotting 2 weeks before harvest caused non-significant reduction in equatorial diameter of bulb, bulb weight, number of cloves per bulb, 50-clove weight and cured bulb yield as compared to control. It is therefore advisable that the practice of leaf knotting may be omitted to save labour charges, whereas the practice of scape removal in hardneck garlic cultivars should be exercised only after studying the response of that particular cultivar to scape removal. &nbsp

Pathways to Belonging and Engagement: Testing a Tailored Social Belonging Intervention for University Students

Background Prominent theories of motivation suggest that belonging plays a critical role in student success (Connell & Wellborn, 1991). Social-belonging interventions have been shown to improve student belonging, well-being, engagement, and more—especially those from traditionally disadvantaged backgrounds (Walton & Brady, 2017). The current study aimed to explore the effects of a tailored social-belonging intervention delivered in introductory classes at VCU on students’ belonging, engagement, persistence, and achievement. Methods A diverse sample of first-year undergraduate students at VCU participated. To create authentic intervention materials, we collaborated with a diverse group of upper-level undergraduate student researchers who wrote narratives to present vivid stories of how they personally experienced and overcame struggles to belong. Prior to and following the intervention, students completed a survey that assessed student belonging, engagement, and social and academic fit. We also collected student demographics, achievement, and additional data from institutional records. Results Following the implementation of the belonging intervention, data was collected on students’ sense of belonging, their social and academic fit at the university, and other related outcomes. While most students felt as though they belonged at VCU and had the potential to succeed, there were still some students who worried whether they belonged in college. Conclusions From students’ responses, faculty and advisors of first-year students were given an overview on students’ current states of belonging at VCU. As an implication for future research, we argue that including diverse upper-level students as fellow researchers in this work strengthens the authenticity and effectiveness of the belonging intervention.https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/gradposters/1171/thumbnail.jp

General insurance marketing: a review and future research agenda

    Get PDF
The financial services sector is a huge and diverse industry comprising many different forms of organisations and product offerings. Yet, a review of past papers in the Journal of Financial Services Marketing (JFSM) reveals a heavy bias towards articles on banking, to the neglect of other equally important financial services categories. The purpose of this paper is to address this imbalance and to call for more research to be conducted in a wider range of financial services categories. In particular, general insurance is singled out as a category worthy of further research. Looking to the past, this paper reviews research published to-date on general insurance in the JFSM to establish a benchmark and explore theoretical contributions. Attention is then turned to the future to identify a research agenda for the general insurance sector going forward. 5 important themes are identified: trust, transparency and simplification, technology, HNW and Takaful

Update on cervical disc arthroplasty: where are we and where are we going?

    Get PDF
Despite the very good results of anterior cervical discectomy and fusion, there are concerns of adjacent level degeneration. For this reason, interest has grown in the potential for motion sparing alternatives. Cervical disc arthroplasty is thus evolving as a potential alternative to fusion. Specific design characteristic and implants will be reviewed and outcomes summarized
